Near West Theatre :: Music by Richard Rodgers. Book & lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II ... Set in the opulent Far East in the 1860’s, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic tells the true story of adventurous Englishwoman, Anna Leonowens (Amiee Collier), who becomes governess to the many children of the autocratic King of Siam (David Loy), now Thailand. Talking on the themes of imperialism and the perceived barbarism of Siam, it has vital and pertinent things to say about differing cultural perspectives on slavery, polygamy, and the roles of women in society. The score is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s very best, including the songs "Shall We Dance," "Getting to Know You" and "I Whistle a Happy Tune." Based on Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon.
